Breeding Philosophy

Since 2005, the Cree herd has shown consistent and significant improvements compared to the Santa Gertrudis breed average. This is evident in the Fertility, Breeding Production and Carcass Weight, where the Cree herd, represented in Red on the graph, has outperformed the Santa Gertrudis breed, shown in green. The upward trends highlight the effectiveness of the Cree herd’s breeding and management strategies, resulting in superior genetic progress and productivity gains over time.

We have been using Cree Santa bulls since Shaun and Jo began their stud. Living on the coastal side of the Burnett Range we have achieved very good results.

“Congratulations to Shaun and Jo for continuing for a decade to produce bulls that consistently produce in our commercial setting, cattle that are reproductively sound and continually meet the top of our target market.
Cree bulls survive in a variety of geography for us, and continually induce a calving rate in excess of 90%, with an extremely positive impact on our mature weight.
Our ability not only to join our herd by numbers, but also quality, is due in no small part to the extremely dedicated and focused approach to not only the genetic section, but the sale preparation they experience at Cree.”

We have been using Cree bulls for 17 years in our mainly Santa breeder herd, and have seen some very obvious benefits, as well as some not-so-obvious benefits.
Improvements in fertility and temperament are very welcome and easily noticed, as is good doing ability and finishing well in a variety of seasons and situations. The less obvious one are big reductions in udder problems in cows of any age, and very few hernias and infected navels in calves and weaners.
It is also good to know that Shaun and Jo will happily stand behind their bulls if any problems were to come up.
We have seen Shaun and Jo dramatically improve their herd using EBVs and we are trying to do the same thing with ours. We find EBVs a great tool when evaluating potential sires for our herd, and we know that the information supplied in the sale catalogue is second to none. We still have our visual appraisal of the bull and his own raw data and measurements, then compare that with the EBVs. We take particular notice of the Days to Calving figure which is impossible to judge visually.
If we feel that all of the information is consistently saying the bull would be an asset to our herd we are happy to put in several more bids because we know we will have a very good chance of getting the benefits we are expecting.
